ByteDance’s AI coding tool TRAE launches free “SOLO Mode” in China

ByteDance’s AI programming platform TRAE has officially rolled out its flagship SOLO mode on the China version—now free for all users. This marks TRAE’s evolution from a code-assist tool to an end-to-end “software delivery” solution, offering Chinese developers a fully automated development workflow.

Since its China launch in March, TRAE has attracted over 10 million monthly active users and generated more than 6 billion lines of adopted code.

SOLO Mode: From Requirements to Deployment

Built on the concept of “Context Engineering,” SOLO integrates multi-modal inputs—such as product specs, code repos, and web links—to autonomously analyze requirements, break down tasks, execute coding, and deploy applications.

Key new features include:

  • SOLO Coder Agent: Handles complex tasks like refactoring and bug fixes via a multi-agent system that mimics a dev team.
  • Context Compression: Preserves essential info in long development chains, reducing AI hallucinations and cost.
  • Code Change Tracking: Shows real-time AI edits, giving developers full oversight.

Natural Language → Live Web App in Minutes

With the built-in SOLO Builder, users can describe an app in plain language—e.g., “Build a vocabulary trainer for CET-4/6 words”—and TRAE will auto-generate, test, and deploy a working web application. The system unifies editor, terminal, browser, and docs in one view, with live previews and manual override options.

Experienced developers report full front-end apps built from scratch in under 15 minutes, a game-changer for startups and indie creators. TRAE positions SOLO as a “Responsive Coding Agent”, optimized for web and front-end development.

Local Models, Gradual Rollout

The China version leverages domestic large models—including Doubao, Kimi, and Qwen—to ensure data security and low-latency performance. Access is being gradually expanded from the official waitlist, with ongoing updates based on user feedback.
