AI could eliminate 3 Million Low-Skill jobs in UK by 2035, but net job growth expected

A new report from the UK’s National Foundation for Educational Research (NFER) forecasts that AI and automation could displace around 3 million low-skill jobs by 2035—particularly affecting machine operators, technical staff, and administrative roles. Yet, the overall UK labor market is still projected to grow, with a net gain of 2.3 million jobs, driven by rising demand for high-skilled professionals.

Contrary to popular belief, some research—including studies from King’s College London—suggests AI may impact high-skill roles more significantly than previously thought. Since the launch of tools like ChatGPT, even well-paid sectors have seen layoffs.

The UK government identifies management consultants, psychologists, and legal professionals as among the occupations most vulnerable to AI disruption. In contrast, physically demanding or highly interpersonal roles—such as athletes, roofers, and bricklayers—are deemed far less automatable.

Businesses are already adapting: London-based law firm Clifford Chance recently cut about 10% of its business support staff, citing AI adoption. Similarly, PwC confirmed it has scaled back large-scale hiring, noting that AI is reshaping how companies evaluate and recruit talent.
