On February 11, Google unveiled “Disco,” a new AI-powered Chrome experiment, via its official blog. Its first feature, GenTabs, instantly transforms a user’s open browser tabs into a personalized, interactive web app—currently available only to macOS users via a waitlist on Google Labs.
Powered by the latest Gemini 3 model, GenTabs analyzes the content of open tabs and combines it with the user’s Gemini chat history to generate functional web pages through natural-language conversation—no coding required. For example:
- Students can auto-assemble research papers and sources into a visual knowledge base with charts.
- Home cooks can turn scattered recipes into meal plans with shopping lists and nutrition info.
- Similar workflows apply to travel planning, home renovation, course design, and more.
Unlike competitors like Perplexity’s Comet or OpenAI’s ChatGPT Atlas—which build entirely new browsers—Google is embedding AI directly into Chromium, preserving the familiar address bar and tab interface to lower adoption barriers. All generated content automatically links back to original sources for traceability, and users can keep refining the app using plain language.
Google stressed that Disco is just the first step in Chrome’s AI evolution. The most useful features will eventually be integrated into the main Chrome browser and expanded to Windows and mobile. Currently in early testing with limited access, the project aims to leverage community feedback to rapidly iterate—and beat rivals in defining the next generation of browser interaction.
