The company explains that maintaining a separate model for code is no longer necessary, as the general-purpose reasoning of GPT-5.5 now exceeds the performance of specialized coding models across all major benchmarks. Former Codex users are being transitioned to the new "GPT-5.5-Dev" tier, which includes specialized optimization for low-latency code completion.
