In a recent discussion, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Apple’s former chief design officer Jony Ive outlined plans for a new AI-powered device designed to offer a calmer, less distracting user experience. The device—intended to be portable and screenless—aims to deliver relevant information contextually, without the interruptions common in today’s smartphones and apps.
Altman described current digital interfaces as overwhelming, likening them to “walking through Times Square”—a barrage of notifications and stimuli that fuels frustration rather than focus. In contrast, the new device is being engineered to filter out noise and provide timely, useful insights, fostering long-term user trust through strong contextual awareness.
Ive emphasized a design ethos of “simple but not simplistic,” prioritizing intuitive visual and tactile interactions that allow users to engage with the device naturally and effortlessly. He noted the product is on track for a launch in approximately two years.
