According to Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman in a December 22nd report, Apple is making significant progress on its highly anticipated AR glasses, internally referred to as "Apple Glasses" or "Apple Vision." Touted as a core driver for Apple's next decade, the product is currently slated for a reveal in late 2026, with shipments expected in 2027.
Apple CEO Tim Cook has reportedly designated the project as the company's "top strategic priority," devoting substantial personal effort to developing a product intended to surpass competitors like Meta. Cook's long-term vision is a lightweight, all-day wearable offering true augmented reality by seamlessly overlaying digital information onto the real world.
Due to current technological constraints, the first-generation model will prioritize a lightweight design. It is initially positioned as an "iPhone accessory," similar to the Apple Watch. Its primary selling points will center on Siri voice interactions and AI-powered smart features, rather than full visual AR overlays.
While the initial version holds back on advanced visual technology, it is seen as a critical foundational step. With the Vision Pro, Apple established its "spatial computing" software ecosystem. The Apple Glasses project now aims to push the limits of wearable hardware, facilitating a transition from bulky headsets to an everyday wearable device.
