Alibaba’s DAMO Academy has unveiled "DAMO COCA," a specialized AI model designed to assist in the early detection of colorectal cancer. The model marks a significant advancement in non-invasive medical diagnostics, capable of identifying early-stage lesions from standard CT scans with an 86.6% sensitivity rate.
Unlike traditional colonoscopies, which are invasive and require extensive patient preparation, DAMO COCA can analyze routine abdominal scans that were taken for unrelated reasons. This "Opportunistic Screening" approach could save thousands of lives by catching cancer in its earliest, most treatable stages before symptoms even appear.
The model has been validated across multiple hospitals in China and is now being offered to global partners. Alibaba’s team emphasized that the AI is intended to support, not replace, radiologists. By highlighting potential areas of concern in seconds, the tool allows doctors to focus their attention on the most high-risk cases, improving overall diagnostic accuracy and efficiency.
